TROWBRIDGE
PIONEERS IN MOVING & STORAGE INDUSTRY
From
our very beginnings in 1892, Trowbridge was an early pioneer in the household
goods moving, storage, distribution and transportation business.
The history of the Trowbridge Storage company dates back to
the year 1892, when a young man, R. Jay Trowbridge started a moving company
at the age of 23. In that year he purchased a used coal stove, and having some
ingenuity and being a salesman, he cleaned up this coal stove and resold it
to a buyer for $5.00, by making this transaction, this coal stove had to be
hauled resulting in two facets in the household goods business. The first was
one of selling used furniture the other of hauling used furniture. As time progressed
he went into a third segment of the moving business, the warehousing and storage
portion.
In the late 1800’s, R. Jay Trowbridge started, building
what is known today as Trowbridge Moving and Relocation Services. He also started
building up a sizable fleet of wagons for hauling and storage of household goods.
He built this fleet up to 16 mule-drawn wagons, designed for hauling crated
freight to the railheads, and packing material and packing crews for residential
moves.
Some of the fleet was also delegated to handle long distance moving. In the
early 1900’s, 50 miles was considered long distance moving. In conjunction
with the Trowbridge fleet expansion, a warehouse complex was designed. In building
the first phase of his household goods warehouse, Mr. Trowbridge installed perhaps
one of the first hydraulic water-powered elevators to be used in the United
States. Trowbridge also installed one of the first sprinkler systems in a household
goods warehouse.
Continuing
with rapid expansion of Mr. Trowbridge’s business up to 1923, he completed
approximately 100.000 sq. ft. warehouse, and built a reputation in the local
moving and crating field. He also developed a sizable crating department and
was shipping household goods via rail and boat all over the world.
In the year 1925 the mule-drawn wagons were replaced with a fleet of Sterling
trucks. This fleet enabled Mr. Trowbridge to expand his long distance moving
to the neighboring states.
The Trowbridge Storage Co. also became affiliated with one of
the first van lines in the United States. The company still continued to progress
and expand in the long distance fields by replacing the 1925 fleet of Sterlings
to the pneumatic tire era.
Today, Trowbridge is headquartered and operates from a state-of-the-art transportation
complex in suburban Columbus, Ohio, USA. Trowbridge is a highly regarded transportation
and relocation services company providing services worldwide. For the past 25
years, Trowbridge has been an agent for the worlds largest household mover,
